Sedation Dentistry

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry, or sleep dentistry is a pharmacological way of relaxing your body and mind during dental procedures. At Petrie Advanced Dental, this is achieved through the use of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and/or oral medications.

Sedation dentistry helps take the “edge” off and allows you to be more comfortable and relaxed during your procedures at Petrie Advanced Dental. The mind and the body are inextricably connected, and sometimes fear can take over. Many of us feel this on some level, and at times, it can be very debilitating. However, through the use of medication, we can manage and allay these fears to give you a positive, relaxing dental experience.

Sedation Options

Sedation dentistry is an option for just about anyone who experiences dental anxiety, from those who are a little uneasy during procedures to those who have full-blown dental phobia. Most people can safely tolerate and handle minor sedation, though certain medical conditions can negate the use of some medications. These will be discussed on a case-by-case basis with Dr. Petrie.

Nitrous Oxide: Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is what we use most frequently for easing our patients’ mild to moderate anxiety. At our office, the gas is administered through a small, flexible nasal cannula instead of the large, bulky facemask that most people associate with laughing gas. With mild sedation through nitrous oxide, recovery is quick so you can resume your normal activities immediately.

Oral Conscious Sedation: If you experience moderate to severe dental anxiety or are in need of extensive restorative procedures, oral conscious sedation may be an option. Oral sedation does not require the use of needles; instead, you will be given a prescription pill which, taken about an hour before your appointment, will have you fully relaxed by the time you arrive at our office. We recommend having a friend or family member drive you to and from our office, as oral sedation will take several hours to wear off completely.

Dr. Petrie and the team at Petrie Advanced Dental want to make your dental experience as stress-free as possible. If dental fear has prevented you from getting the dental care you need, schedule an appointment at our Tacoma dental office.
